All my ware is cone 10 stoneware and only occasionally porcelain. All are food and dishwasher safe. About glazes: I am more attracted to matte glazes for their beauty, however, these kinds of glazes tend to be more porous and more prone to staining, especially if a matte white. I caution against putting a red beet salad in a matte white bowl, but if for some reason you accidentally do that or feel compelled in that direction, you can add some bleach and very quickly wash the bowl thoroughly to remove the stains—do not leave the bleach to soak, unless you want your food seasoned with the taste of bleach.
Pitchers, carafes, mugs, cups, tumblers, and tankards can, for the most part, be made within the range of what appears here, not exactly the same, but in the range of. The price range of most drinking vessels are 40.00 to 55.00, large tankards being on the upper end of the price range and simple, non-handled cups on the low end. Pitchers are 90.00 to 125.00, depending on size and glaze treatment. Coffe carafes come with a ceramics filter holder and are 145.00 for the pair.
Tea bowls are one-offs and cannot be duplicated; they are not wheel thrown and have anywhere from one to five glaze applications; the more elaborate the glaze, the more expensive the tea bowl; prices range from 65.00 to 300.00.
The tension in ceramics between high craft and art sometimes seems a gaping chasm and other times, a hard, narrow line with very little space in between. If you see a painting, there’s a tendency to call it art regardless of subjective appraisals at to whether or not it’s good art or bad art. Whereas, the appraisals of ceramic works are, most frequently, confined its ability to function, either well or poorly, with grace or awkwardness. No mater how much time is put into a ceremonial bowl, no matter how novel or artful it is (or isn’t), it will be understood mainly in terms of its function. Due to the aforementioned, the number of visual artists that use clay as their medium is small compared with with other mediums. It’s a barrier, albeit, with requisite caveats.
I’m not really sure what to say about my experimental work, other than some pieces allude to function, while others are completely non-functional, and that I find that tension to be annoying, interesting and a right good challenge.
